Description

Jules Georges Redon, [1869-1943] was a well-known French artist specializing in a wide range of paintings and illustrations. One of his specialties between the 2 world wars was a series of wonderful vignettes of children in amusing and innocent situations. This is an original print made during the artist's lifetime, it is not a post-WW2 or newer print.

This print is one of his best works in the series, known as EMOTION, showing a little boy handing a girl a handful of lovely flowers. The girl, reacts with beautiful emotion, and in typical fashion for her age, grabs onto her skirt as she raises her hand to her mouth. A wonderful example of emotions from both children.

This print is created by the stone lithographic printing process, where the paper is pressed into different etched stones, a different stone for each color. The process created a far better level of detail, but is labor intensive. Because the paper is pressed down against the paper using a padded printing plate the paper is attached to, an imprint is created along all 4 sides, effectively "framing" the print. This paper has that imprint, indicating it is a stone litho print.

I've been told this print is in it's original frame, and the vintage framer's info is on the back. I bought it from the original owner's estate about 40 years ago. It has always been kept away from direct sunlight, so the colors are still vibrant. The print does have very slight foxing, but an experienced paper conservator can easily remedy those marks if desired. Frame size is about 18.5" X 13".
