Description

Jules Georges Redon, [1869-1943] was a well-known French artist specializing in a wide range of paintings and illustrations. One of his specialties between the 2 world wars was a series of wonderful vignettes of children in amusing and innocent situations. on the reverse side is a faint hand drawn daily menu for one of the 4 famous restaurants in Paris that are still in business today:

Cafe De Paris, Fouquet, Armenonville, & Pre Catelan.

Many years ago I spoke with one of the restaurants [I believe it was Fouquet] and they explained Mr. Redon had granted permission for the 4 locales to use his prints as covers for the daily menus. All of the Redon menus are pre-WW2.

This print is one of his best works in the series, known as Ne buvez jamais d'eau [Never drink the water], showing a little boy peeing into a stream, as all the fishes and frogs flee in horror. One frog, having leaped out of the water, can be seen vomiting up the water it ingested!

This print is created by the stone lithographic printing process, where the paper is pressed into different etched stones, a different stone for each color. The process created a far better level of detail, but is labor intensive.

I bought it from the estate of the couple that brought it back to America, my purchase was about 40 years ago. It's framed in the original wood and glass frame from when it was first brought to America. It has always been kept away from direct sunlight, so the colors are still vibrant. The print does have some water damage [staining], but an experienced paper conservator can remedy those stains if desired. Frame size is about 18" X 13". I am selling this print/menu due to advancing age and medical condition.
